Tortas Ahogadas

You know what we love about Mexico? EVERYTHING! Its people are wonderful, its beaches are out of this world, its tradition, history, and culture are incredible, and the food… oh the food!

Today we have a recipe for you and we think that you’d love it. If you do, we will be posting a couple of recipes from different places in Mexico.

Today, we’ll start with Tortas Ahogadas, which are representative of Puerto Vallarta.

Tortas Ahogadas (Spicy Mexican Sandwich)


  • 10 Mexican-style white bread baguettes
  • 1 lb. of pork meat
  • 1 lb. of tomatoes
  • 1.7 oz. of arbol peppers
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Salt
  • Pepper


Sauce: Boil the tomatoes with the salt, pepper, and chopped garlic until soft and blend it into a sauce. In another pot, boil the peppers until tender and blend until it forms a puree. Add small amounts of this mixture into the sauce until you reach the desired level of heat.

Meat: Boil the meat with the salt, pepper, and bay leaf until it is cooked through. Remove the meat from the water and allow it to cool. Shred or slice the meat once it has cooled.

Sandwich: Slice the bread length-wise, remove some of the dough, and fill it with the cooked meat. Cover with hot tomato sauce mixture.
