Every spring, northwestern Washington State explodes with life. Gray winter skies are replaced by luminous sunshine, which encourages the blooming of thousands of colorful flowers. Nothing embodies the vibrancy of spring in northwestern Washington State than the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival, an annual event that takes place from April 1 – 30 near Mount Vernon, about 50 miles south of Sandcastle at Birch Bay.
The main attraction of the festival is the millions of tulips that fill entire fields with precisely arranged rows of vibrant yellow, red, white, orange, pink, blue, and purple flowers.
You can see many of these flowers from your car by following the festival’s map, but if you want a closer look, make sure to stop by Tulip Town and RoozenGaarde, two of the most prominent tulip growers in the valley.

At Tulip Town, you can browse an indoor flower and garden show, explore various gardens, or do a bit of tulip shopping for your own garden. Meanwhile, RoozenGaarde offers visitors access to its four-acre display garden that houses as many as 250,000 flowers, including more than 100 varieties of tulips, as well as daffodils, hyacinths, and more. Admission to Tulip Town and RoozenGaarde is just $5 USD each, and both places remain open every day throughout the festival.
If you’re staying at Sandcastle at Birch Bay this April and are looking for a fun day trip to take with your family or your significant other, then don’t miss the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival.
