Golfing in Los Cabos

When some people claim that Los Cabos is North America’s hottest golf destination, they have lots of reasons for doing so. Try over 200 of them. There’s at least that many holes of golf to be played in the Los Cabos area, between the cities of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. With over twelve golf resorts offering 9-hole and 18-hole courses, Los Cabos is a golfer’s paradise. It’s not unfair to make a comparison: the Louvre is to art what Los Cabos is to golf (in North America).

Some of the biggest names in golf have designed courses here. Jack Nicklaus. Tiger Woods. Greg Norman. Robert Trent Jones II. The experts who know golf the best have built golf courses for the casual and serious golfer here in Baja California Sur. The Sea of Cortez surrounds the peninsula, giving many of the golf courses a gorgeous background of surf and sun. Why did so many developers decide to invest in golf courses here? The Los Cabos Guide provides the answer: “The magnificent terrain is comparable to that found in Arizona and California desert golf courses. What sets Los Cabos apart is the presence of the Sea of Cortez, a sparkling water-wonderland of incredible hues reaching as far south as the eye can see. Golfers here in Cabo San Lucas Mexico have an added bonus…eleven months of rain-free vacation play.”

Picture yourself taking on the challenging holes of the Cabo Real, designed by Robert Trent Jones II. Cabo Real was the host of PGA Senior Slam events in 1996 and 1999. You’ve been improving your drive this past year, in preparation for your trip to Los Cabos. Will your skills stand up to the test of the 14th hole, with its canyons and summit nearly 500 feet above sea level?

Not all the golf courses are open to the general public. Some courses are private for exclusive residents of luxury communities. However, some communities will allow prospective buyers to play a round of golf, trying to win over new residents.

Take Your Pick of World Famous Golf Courses

Here are just a few of the spectacular Los Cabos golf courses:

Palmilla Golf Club

Mountain Course 9 holes
Sea Course 9 holes
Arroyo Course 9 holes
Designed by Jack Nicklaus

The Palmilla Golf Club is located right between the Grand Regina Los Cabos and Club Regina Los Cabos resorts. Three different courses all designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus. He wanted these courses to appeal to golfers of all levels, so he included five sets of tee boxes for various handicaps. The Ocean Course has some spectacular views of the Sea of Cortes.

San Lucas Country Club

18 holes
Designed by Roy Dye

The San Lucas Country Club golf course was one of the first to be developed, which comes with a tremendous advantage: it is the only one with views of the Land’s End rock formations. There are nine lakes that dot the landscape, between the broad fairways and beautiful greens. The longest hole is 610 yards, challenging to even the most serious golfers.

Cabo del Sol

Desert Course 18 holes
Designed by Tom Weiskopf

Ocean Course 18 holes
Designed by Jack Nicklaus

The Desert Course by Tom Weiskopf maintains the natural terrain, with ocean views from all 18 holes. Golf Digest ranks the Desert Course #6 in Mexico. With arroyos, canyons, lakes, and waterfalls, the course presents many challenges to its visitors while they enjoy the breathtaking vistas.

The Ocean Course is currently ranked #70 in the world by Golf Digest. Opening in 1994, it is quite a feat to be ranked this high when you consider all the new courses that have opened in the last 22 years. Jack Nicklaus said this was the best golf property he had ever seen. The last three greens present a unique challenge since they are situated on the rocks near the waves of Whale Bay.
